JESUS, THE GOD MAN
JOHN 1:1 - 3

1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2  He was with God in the beginning.

3  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

John, the writer of this Gospel, wants to make one thing perfectly clear:Jesus is more than a mere man--he is the God-Man.  To accomplish  this, John opens his Gospel by linking Jesus with the creation.  The first verse of Genesis reads, "In the beginning God. . . " John picks up on that language and begins his Gospel, "In the beginning was the Word."

To the ancient Greeks, the term "Word" referred to the all-pervasive Mind, the entity that ruled the universe and gave meaning to all things. John understood the term.  That's why he used it.  He wanted his readers to know that Jesus was--and is--more than a mere man; he's God in the flesh.

If the sky outside is clear tonight, do some star-gazing.  You mightgo for a short walk, or perhaps simply sit on a chair in your backyard.  As you look up at the stars, contemplate the power and might of the Creator.  And thank God that while he's as big as the universe, he clothed himself in flesh so that you could know him.  Jesus, the Word, the One who was "with God," the One who indeed "was God," walked the surface of this earth in human form.  For you.  For all of humanity.  Praise God for his indescribable goodness!
