8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

In this passage, Jesus spoke of a progression of steps the disciples would take in service to him. First, Jesus said they would receive power from God. This power would flow from the Holy Spirit, who would dwell within them. Second, Jesus said they would tell the world about him, beginning in Jerusalem and spreading outward from there.

As you read this passage, think about the men who heard Jesus speak these words. Most of the disciples were ordinary, working-class men; none of them had the power within theselves to spread the word about Jesus. Their power came from above, and God used them to influence their culture for Jesus.

This same Holy Spirit can empower you to do God's work in the world. Through this passage, Jesus calls all people who believe in him to witness to his power and saving grace. As you meditate on Jesus' words, think of ways you can shape your personal ministry around this verse. Then pray for the Spirit to open up opportunities so that you can influence your world for Jesus Christ.
