I've been
pondering the tsunami that hit Asia
and all that it implies. I've listened
to arguments that it was
-
a one time
freak of nature
-
the work of
Satan
-
God's judgment
on that part of the world for
persecution of Christians
-
the first of
many more to come
To be honest, I
haven't got a clue. I do know that it
wasn't just a one-time freak of nature
because like volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes and tsunamis are part of
normal everyday life on earth. They
are less common perhaps than some
events like rain and snow but still
regular occurrences.
I do know that
it moved the earth 2cm on its axis.
That may not sound like much, but to
tilt a ball the size of our planet
takes an inconceivable amount of
energy. The shifting of our earth on
it's axis will also have some impact
on every other planet and heavenly
body.
I know that the
earthquake that precipitated the wave
was somewhere in the range of 9 on the
Richter Scale. That's 10,000 times as
strong as a 5 on the scale, but a
million times the energy. That much
energy is beyond my comprehension.
I've done some
reading that reports some coastlines
moved as much as 65 feet. If you want
to picture that, walk 25-30 paces look
back at where you started and imagine
the ground moving so much that you end
up back at your starting point. It
would leave nothing standing.
Thinking of that
energy and movement drew me to a
passage in John's Revelation of Jesus
Christ that I had never been able to
picture before.
The seventh
angel poured out his bowl into the
air, and out of the temple came a
loud voice from the throne, saying,
"It is done!" Then there came
flashes of lightning, rumblings,
peals of thunder and a severe
earthquake. No earthquake like it
has ever occurred since man has been
on earth, so tremendous was the
quake. The great city split into
three parts, and the cities of the
nations collapsed. God remembered
Babylon the Great and gave her the
cup filled with the wine of the fury
of his wrath. Every island fled away
and the mountains could not be
found.
Revelation 16:17-20 NIV
No earthquake
like it has occurred since man has
been on earth. That means it will be
bigger than the once caused by the
tsunami. That means the cities
falling, the islands fleeing and the
mountains disappearing can be a
literal event. We've seen a taste of
it.
What does all
this mean? I don't know other than
it's a pretty good indicator that if
we're not in end times already, we
must be drawing nearer. When will the
Lord return? Tomorrow or not for a
very long time yet and He's not
telling.
I do know that
believers have nothing to fear because
we know our ultimate destiny is with
Jesus. It should give us cause to
pause and think about those who do not
know Him and ignite a fire in our
hearts to share Jesus with them. We're
not responsible for the results,
that's Holy Spirit's job, but we are
told to go and tell them.
Until next time,
do not be afraid and share with the
world what Jesus has done in your
life.
