Gleanings From The Word

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life

When God is Silent

In my email inbox were four emails, all from the same person, all sent within a total time frame of half-an-hour. They started with a polite unsubscribe request and moved up to a frothing, yelling unsubscribe and threats of reporting Gleanings as a spammer. The ironic part is that the unsubscribe requests were sent to the wrong email address. Every issue of Gleanings comes with a link that enables readers to unsubscribe instantly so that a reader doesn’t have to wait for a person to manually unsubscribe them.

For those who are wondering, we DON'T send ANY form of unsolicited email. To get Gleanings From The Word you have to sign up or be a member of an Internet club or newsgroup that sends Gleanings From The Word to its members.

As frustrated with the email as I was, I understood the writer’s frustration. Sometimes we want instant responses, instant answers and instant pleasure and things don't always work that way. We rant and froth, we wail and moan and carry on. We call out to God and say things like "Why don't you answer me."

Sometimes He does answer but we aren't listening. There are answers to many of life's questions and problems in the Bible. Have we taken the time to look and see what the Bible has to say about the subject at hand? Often the answer is already at hand but is gathering dust on the bookshelf.

my eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises. Hear my voice in accordance with your love; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your laws.
Psalm 119:148-149 NIV

Sometimes He doesn't answer, because we already know the answer. There is sin in our life that needs to be dealt with.

Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters wicked things. No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments and speak lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil. Isaiah 59:1-4 NIV

Sometimes His answer is screaming out to us from the heavens, but because it's not what we want to hear, we ignore it. Our heart isn't right with Him.

"But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. Psalm 81:11

Sometimes we ask out of the wrong motives.

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:3 NIV

Sometimes we ask and don't hear because it is a time of stretching in our faith. Even in those silent moments, He hasn't abandoned us.

God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Hebrews 13:5B

When we cry out to God and don't hear an answer:

  • look in the Book for answers

  • check that our motives are right

  • get rid of the sin in our life

  • get your heart right with God

  • Trust

Until next time, if you find the heavens silent, may the reason become apparent to you. He's still there, He still cares and He always wants what is best for you.

Be blessed.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)!

Kevin

YOU ARE

Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you are able.

I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 NIV

This promise can be true of you no matter what you have done in life. Jesus loves you and wants nothing more than to restore you to God, forgive your sins and give you eternal life with Him. He wants a personal relationship with YOU. Will you let Him into your life?

If you haven't made the decision to accept Christ as Lord
