Thank God?

The two older gentlemen were deep in discussion. From the sound of it, I would presume that neither one was a Christian. I heard one say in a flippant tone, "Thank God!" His friend, the older looking of the two replied, "Thank God? What for? What's He ever done for me?" and they both laughed.

My heart broke over his comment. They both have lived a long life and they are completely ignorant of all the things God has done and continues to do for them. The sad irony is that God does wondrous things even for those who choose to reject Him and His love.

I wonder how God feels when His gifts and His love are rejected. I wonder if His heart breaks like yours or mine does in those kind of situations. The simple truth is that He's worthy of the praise and thanks of everyone, even those who reject His Son.

Everything good comes from Him.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows
James 1:17 NIV

The world we live in, the air we birth, our very existence is due to His creation.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth
Genesis 1:1

His blessings shower on the righteous and unrighteous alike.

But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Matthew 5:44-45 NIV

I could go on and list dozens of things, but I think you get the point. God has special blessings for those who accept Him, but He even blesses those who hate Him. That makes Him worthy of praise.

As believers we should understand the source of all the good and perfect gifts, and of life itself is God. We have no excuse to not be praising. Even in the midst of the darkest times we have plenty to praise God about. It's no wonder we read in the New Testament

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV

If you are in the middle of darkness and can't think of a thing to be thankful for, look around and make a list. Everything good and beautiful comes from Him. He's worthy of our praise at all times.

Until next time, praise God and offer Him your thanks.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)

Be blessed

Kevin
