WINNING THE PRIZE

1 CORINTHIANS 9:24-27

24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Olympic champions earn their medals the hard way--they work for them.  On an average day, the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, has 350 athletes training in different events.  These young people have given up full-time studies and family time and have dedicated themselves to one thing:  winning in national and international competition.

Most of us will never have the privilege of participating in the Olympics.  But as believers, we're called to train for a prize that will shine long after an Olympic gold medal has lost its luster.  Right now God has a prize waiting for us--eternal life.  It will be our reward for running the race of life in a way that pleases God.

A dedicated athlete has to carefully chart out his training routine.  So does a dedicated Christian.  What activities would be on a godly man's spiritual training regimen?  What activities would such a man avoid?  Paul responded to the challenge of "running the race" with discipline, devotion and direction.  He kept the finish line in mind at all times. Can you think of ways that will help you maintain that kind of eternal perspective?
