Gleanings From The Word
Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life
Thundering Snow
As I walked around the lake yesterday, I thought I heard the sound of
thunder. In Canada, in mid winter, thunder is not a sound you expect to hear.
It certainly wasn't typical thunderstorm weather, the skies were clear and
the temperature was still well below zero.
I shrugged it off and kept walking. A couple of minutes later, there it
was again, the unmistakable clap of thunder. It wasn't an explosion and it
wasn't a gunshot, it was thunder. One loud clap and it stopped again.
This time I listened intently, vigorously searching my brain for
information about how thunder works. Was thunder possible in sub-zero
temperatures? I didn't think so, but I wasn't sure. All I knew for sure was
that I was certain I had heard thunder.
All was silent for a long time. I rounded a corner and once again heard
thunder. Only it wasn't.
A front-end loader was busy dumping snow into a waiting truck and as
the first load hit the empty truck bed it boomed. The way the sound echoed
off the buildings and down the lake made it sound exactly like thunder.
Another couple of minutes and I would never have solved the mystery because
they were just finishing up the last truckload.
Even though I "knew" I heard thunder, I was wrong.
Sometimes our senses can deceive us. Sometimes, our emotions can
deceive us. Even science can be wrong. We need to be very careful about using
these things as standards of objective truth.
There is only one standard of truth, God's Word.
Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths;
guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope
is in you all day long.
Psalm 25:4-5 NIV
I have not spoken in secret, from somewhere in a
land of darkness; I have not said to Jacob's descendants, `Seek me in
vain.' I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right.
Isaiah 45:19
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and
the life
John 14:6a NIV
Truth doesn't change.
At times it may not match up to our experience. Just because you don't
feel God's presence doesn't mean He's not there.
When our emotions tell us that we don't need to pay attention to what
the Bible is saying because we don't "like" a given passage, we need to rein
in our emotions. Emotion has always been a poor evaluator of truth.
When the Word of God doesn't line up with our experience, or with our
emotional state, we need to stick with the Word. We haven't experienced
everything and our emotions will change.
Even in the world of science, truths can change. The world isn't flat,
the speed of light has been exceeded in a lab, gravity can be overcome, and
man can get airborne. Science is a wonderful tool for understanding some of
the how of creation but it isn’t infallible.
In a constantly changing world, we need to anchor ourselves to the
unchanging Word of truth. If something doesn't seem to line up with the Word,
discard it and stick with God's Word.
Until next time, make sure that when you seek the truth, you look for
it in the Bible.
Be blessed.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)!
