TREMBLING HANDS

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee (Psalm 56:3).

How many hours of this year do you expect to spend in fear?

Trembling times come to all. Blessed is the person who understands that God loves him and is able to deliver him from danger. He can transform fear into faith.

Dr. James McConkey, in his book on prayer, says that one summer when he was ill he spent the season on the shores of the Great Lakes. Sailing was the only recreation he could find and one day while he was sailing in the middle of a bay, the wind suddenly died out completely. McConkey's boat was absolutely still. There seemed not a breath of air moving. The hot rays of the August sun beat down mercilessly upon his weak body. He had come out with a stiff breeze, and naturally he now began to pray for a breeze to take him home.

For an hour Dr. McConkey prayed, but no breeze came. Then he saw a boat coming toward him. An old fisherman, realizing McConkey was helpless without any wind, was on his way out to row the sailboat to harbor.

Dr. McConkey says he learned an important lesson through that fearful experience. He had been praying for a breeze but his real need had been for deliverance from the situation. While God denied the words of his petition, He provided for his need.

We cannot remove the trembling times from this coming year. But we can follow the good advice given by David. When fear's paralysis grips us, we can look to Jesus and exchange fear for faith. Danger means it is time to trust in Him. Time segments that would be lost to fear can become moments of victory. When afraid, trust in Him
