It's that
time of year. The weather is very
volatile and it can be -30 or colder
one week and +5 the next. With that
volatility comes rain and snow. Last
night it was warm and I noticed a
little rain on the living room window.
Seeing the
rain got me pondering the hydrological
cycle (water evaporates into the
atmosphere and falls again as rain or
snow and the cycle is repeated). The
cycle was first "discovered" by two
scientists named Perrault and
Marriotte in the 1700's. Yet it was
described in the Bible thousands of
years before that.
He draws
up the drops of water, which distill
as rain to the streams; the clouds
pour down their moisture and
abundant showers fall on mankind.
Job 36:27-28 NIV
All
streams flow into the sea, yet the
sea is never full. To the place the
streams come from, there they return
again.
Ecclesiastes 1:7 NIV
The Bible
isn't a science textbook, but it
contains a lot of scientific wisdom
that was written long before it was
discovered by science. Let me share a
few examples.
In 1543
Copernicus discovered that the earth
hangs in empty space. The Bible tells
us that in Job.
He
spreads out the northern skies over
empty space; he suspends the earth
over nothing.
Job 26:7 NIV
Most people
thought the earth was flat until
Copernicus came along. He recognized
it as being a sphere. The prophet
Isaiah knew that.
He sits
enthroned above the circle of the
earth, and its people are like
grasshoppers. He stretches out the
heavens like a canopy, and spreads
them out like a tent to live in.
Isaiah 40:22 NIV
There are
global wind currents. Science was able
to map them out in the 1950's and
1960's. Solomon knew that about 1000
BC
The wind
blows to the south and turns to the
north; round and round it goes, ever
returning on its course.
Ecclesiastes 1:6 NIV
There are
many more examples. The book that many
think is nothing but a collection of
myths has proven time and time again
to be completely reliable.
Until next
time, whenever it rains, or snows, or
the wind blows, rejoice. Our Lord is
the Creator and He declared the truth
to us long before mankind ever
"discovered" it.
