Gleanings From The Word

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life

Warning Bells

We've been experiencing Chinook winds the past day or so. A chinook is when warm dry winds sweep in from the Pacific, over the mountains and raise temperatures dramatically. In California they call winds of this type Santa Annas.

The Chinooks are a mixed blessing. The above freezing temperatures are nice, but we've had very little snow this year, and the Chinook has melted most of that off. With no snow cover to protect it, the wind quickly dries out the soil, which is already suffering from this past summer's drought. We could have more drought to look forward to this coming year.

All day yesterday and all last night, our wind chimes have been chiming out non-stop. It's as is they are crying out a warning about the coming wind and it's impact on the soil, like a warning bell clanging out "Danger ahead!"

It's early enough in the winter that we could still get lots of snow and there are still spring rains to come, so they may well be no problem. It's just too soon to tell.

Warning bells are a good thing, unless we hear them too often. When that happens we tend to not pay attention, and when danger does come we find ourselves unaware.

I think that might happen with our fixation over end times. It seems everywhere you turn some pundit or self proclaimed prophet is analyzing why this event or that is proof that Jesus is ready to return. After a while people simply lose interest and the concept that Jesus is coming back begins to loose credibility.

We need to remember that Jesus is coming back

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 ESV

We also need to remember that we don't know when it will happen

"But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Mark 13:32 ESV

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Matthew 24:44 ESV

If we live our lives focused on Him and right with Him we needn't worry about the when, that's God's department. All we need do is remember that He is coming and use the time He has given to glorify His name by sharing Him with others. When we're His, we're His forever.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. John 10:28-29 ESV

In Luke's Gospel, Jesus told them of the signs to come but He also told them something far more important

This will be your opportunity to bear witness. Luke 21:13 ESV

Let the warning bells clang, let the pundits and prophets proclaim all they want. Be secure in knowing that if you are His you will be safe with Him at the right time. Until then share the good news with everyone you meet.

Until next time don't worry about when He is coming, instead rejoice in knowing that He will come and concentrate on making each day count.

Be blessed.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)!
