Gleanings From The Word
Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life
Whiter Laundry
Recently, I watched a commercial for "a new and improved" laundry
detergent. It promised to get my whites whiter than they had ever been. I
don't know if it works or not, existing brands are always coming out with
"new and improved" and I can seldom see any difference in the results.
The thought of having fresh white laundry is appealing, although not
enough to make me change detergents. There is something that just seems
fresher and cleaner if the whites are truly white, not a dingy shade of grey.
Over the years, we've had our share of successes and disasters trying
to keep laundry white. I learned that too much bluing makes the laundry blue.
Too much bleach weakens and fades fabrics. Some detergents deliver on their
claims of white laundry and others don't. Some detergents work well in the
water from one community and fail dismally when you move.
Hanging the whites on a line in the sun helps, but I've learned that
I'm too lazy to do that. Pre-soaking works sometimes, but I forget I put it
in to soak and it slows down laundry production time.
I've decided to settle for reasonably white.
We don't have to settle when it comes to the important laundry of life.
We can be cleansed of the ugliness of our sin. The Bible tells the secret of
truly white laundry.
"Come now, let us reason
together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be
as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
Isaiah 1:18 NIV
Those in heaven have white robes, washed clean in the blood.
After this I looked and there before me was a
great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people
and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They
were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.
And they cried out in a loud voice: "Salvation belongs to our God,
who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb." All the angels were standing
around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They
fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:
"Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and
strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!"
Then one of the elders asked me, "These in white robes--who are they,
and where did they come from?"
I answered, "Sir, you know."
And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great
tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood
of the Lamb.
Revelation 7:9-14 NIV
Those coming with Christ will be dressed in white linen.
I saw heaven standing open and there
before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With
justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his
head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he
himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word
of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and
dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Revelation 19:11-14 NIV
The detergent that truly washes us fresh and clean and dresses us in
white isn't new or improved. It's been around for more than 2,000 years. It's
the blood of Christ shed at Calvary for sinners like you and me.
That's the real detergent for me. How about you?
Until next time, rejoice in the fact that you've been washed clean and
white (even if your laundry isn't).
Be blessed
